Copy Editing v. Proofreading: What’s the Difference?
(And, hey, Melanie…do you offer both?)
Yes, there are differences between these two types of editing. And yes…I offer both! However, the rates will be different due to the amount of time each takes.
- PROOFREADING primarily involves identifying grammar errors, such as errors in spelling and punctuation.
- EDITING (or “copy editing”) goes more in-depth. Depending on the project, this can mean correcting the clarity, readability and flow of the document.
First Impressions Count
Bad grammar really can make or break your professional reputation. Studies in the U.S. and abroad show that amazingly, well over half of customers may decline a company’s services due to bad grammar on the company’s site.
The worst part is that your grammar may be impeccable, but you can still make occasional mistakes. It’s more common than you think, and is usually due to either being pressed for time or going over the same material again and again. (Rereading material makes the brain “skip over” common mistakes in order to understand the bulk of the material.)
